PURPOSE : To clarify the accurate size and anatomic relation of the fourth ventricle in brain US of neonates.MATERIAL & METHODS : We prospectively studied 40 neonates without congenital anomaly and birth trauma, using US,measured the AP diameter of the fourth ventricle in mid-sagittal image and compared with mid-sagittal MR image in10 neonates. RESULTS : The mean AP diameter of the fourth ventricle in US and MRI were 4.79 ± 1.05 mm and 5.5 ±0.94 mm, respectively. Dorsal portion of pons was more echogenic regardless of low echogenicity of both fourthventricle and pons, therefore it was possible for us to discriminate the size and extent of the fourth ventriclefrom the pons. CONCLUSION : Using high resolution US, we can evaluate accurate size and extent of the fourthventricle through the different echogenicity between the fourth ventricle and dorsal portion of the pons.
