Color Doppler imaging (CDI) with Doppler spectral analysis was done to evaluate the age related changes of theophthalmic atrteries in 60 normotensive subjects (Age : 19∼64y, mean =38.3y, M : F = 1 : 1). A 7 MHz lineartransducer for small parts (Acuson L7384) was used. The ophthalmic artery about 1∼1.5 cm behind the optic nervehead was depicted by the CDI. The maximum peak velocity (S1), the second peak velocity (S2), the maximum peakdiastolic velocity (D1) and the end diastolic velocity (D2) were recorded. Additionally, the pulsatility index(PI), the resistive index (RI), the ratio of S1 to S2 (S1 / S2) and the ratio of S1 to D1 (S1 / D1) werecalculated. Correlation between the age and the above indices (ratio) was estimated. PI, RI, S1 / S2 and S1 / D1declined progressively as a function of advancing age. The S1 / S2 showed the strongest inverse correlation withage (r = -0.667). The meaning of the S2's in old age is not clear. It could be related to the decreased complianceof the aged ophthalmic arteries.
