| The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of ultrasonography (US) and US-guided saline enema insuspected childhood intussusception. Real-time US with saline enema was performed on 25 children (27 cases) whowere suspected clinically intussusception. US findings of all cases were a doughnut sign or multiple concentricrings. Twenty-three (85%) among 27 cases were reducted successfully by saline enema. Except for 2 cases, reductionof intussusception was confirmed by entering of liquid from colon into ileum through ileocecal valve. In the othertwo cases, after US-guided hydrostatic reduction, gastrograffin enema demonstrated absence of the intussusceptum.No case showed false negative or false positive with clinical follow up. Four failed cases were reducted afteroperation and no complication or leading point was in all cases. The authors conclude that US is a reliablescreening modality in cases of suspected intussusception and that US-guided hydrostatic reduction is a promisingtechnique. |
