We performed this retrospective study to evaluate the diagnostic value of transrectal ultrasound(TRUS) forprostate cancer and the usefulness of TRUS-guided transperineal prostate biopsy. Fifty patierrts underwentTRUS-guided transperineal prostate biopsy by using automated biopsy gun mounted with 18-gauge, 10cm biopsy needle. The patients were examined with 5MHz transducer in the longitudinal and transverse planes. US criterion forprostate cancer was a typoechoic nodule located in the peripheral zone of the prostate. Fifty-nine biopsies weredone in fifty patients. Sufficient tissue for the histopathologic diagnosis was obtained from forty-nineprocedures(96%). Histopathologically, there were 18 cases(37%) of cancer, 21(43%) nodular hyperplasia, five(10%)inflammation, one(2%) fibrosis, and four(8%) mormal. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and diagnostic accuracy of TRUS for cancer were 83, 74, 65, 88, and 78%, respectively. There was no significant complication related to the procedure. TRUS-guided transperineal proatate biopsy usingautomated biopsy gun is a safe procedure with fairly high diagnostic value. |
