The author studied ultrasonographic findings of 103 pathologically proven pelvic masses in patients with clinically suspected pelvic masses at Chonnam National University Hospital for one year from September 1982 to September 1983. The sonographic diagnosis of pelvic masses was based on determining the their location, internal consistency and origin as well as existence and then sonographically specific diagnosis was tried. Results were follows: 1. Accuracy of gray scale sonography in determining the existence of the pelvic masses was approximately 99%. 2. Accuracy of gray scale sonography in determining the overall correct diagnosis of the pelvic masses compared with proven diagnosis was approximately 66%. 3. A specific diagnosis was possible and its rate was 90% in utering leiomyoma, 88% in simple ovarian cyst, 65-76% in ectopic pregnancy, mucinous cystadenoma, ovarian teratodermoid and hematometra. But less specific diagnosis was 50%in hydrosalpinx and 33% in tubo-ovarian abscess. 4. Accuracy of gray scale sonography in determining the internal consistency of the pelvic masses was approximately 91% 5. Accuracy of gray scale sonography in deterimining the location of the pelvic masses was 93%
