(US features of cystic breast masses: emphasis on internal echo-pattern)
To evaluate the value of sonography in the differential diagnosis of cystic breast masses, we performed aretrospective analysis of sonograms of 22 patients with cystic breast masses that were proved by histopathologyand/or other supplementary diagnostic studies. Twenty two cases consist of 10 non-neoplastic cystic masses(3simple cysts, 1 cystic lipoma, 3 abscesses and 3 galactoceles) and 12 neoplastic cystic masses. Twelve neoplasticmasses included 9 benign lesion (1 lactating adenoma, 6 intraductal papillomas and 2 multiple papillomas), and 3malignant tumors (2 intracystic papillary cancers and 1 invasive ductal cancer) On sonography, most cystic breastmasses showed the smooth margin, homogeneous echo-free internal echo-pattern, and posterior enhancement.Associated findings were the fluid-fluid level and intracystic nodule. The fluid-fluid level was seen in a casewith lactating adenoma and a case with cystic lipoma. There were proved as neoplastic lesions(6 intraductalpapillomas, 2 multiple papillomas and 3 malignancies), while only one lesion as cystic lipoma. The cystic masscontaining mural nodule provided the diagnostic due to the intraductal tumor. However, the presence of intramuralnodule was not significantly helpful in the differenciation of the benignancy and malignancy. In conclusion, sonography was very useful in the differential diagnosis of the cystic breast masses. The internal echo-pattern ofthe cystic mass provided the important due to the correct diagnosis.
