(Ultrasonographic findings of thyroid nodules: differentiation of benign and malignant nodules)
To assess the differential points between benign and malignant nodules, we retrospectively evaluated thesonographic findings of 88 thyroid nodues in 71 patients. The pathology of the lesion was confirmed as benign in58 nodules from 48 patients and malignant in 29 nodules from 23 patients, either at operation or by needleaspiration biopsy. Sonographic findings were analyzed in terms of multiplicity, size, internal echogenicity, peripheral halo, margin, intranodular calcifications, and cervical lymphadenopathy. There was no statisticallysignificant differance in multiplicity, size, peripheral halo, and margin of nodule between malignant and benignnodules (T-test and Ci-square test:p>0.05) Intranodular calcifications, solid nodule, and cervical lymphadenopathywere more frequently seen in malignant nodules, while cystic or mixed echogenicity was more frequent in benignnodules (Chi-square test : p<0.05)
