US-guided needle aspiration: as a sole treatment modality of the liver abscess)
.
The ultrasund-guided needle aspiration (US-GNA) of 24 consecutive patients with liver abscesses was performedas a substitute for indwelling catheter drainage (ICD). Twenty gauge needle was routinely used in 20 cases, but infour cases of thick abscess, 18-gauge needle was used. Solitary abscess was found in 21 patients (87.5%) andmultiple abscesses in three patients (12.5%) Total of 27 abscesses in 24 patients were noted and 24 abscess whichwere larger than 3.0cm were aspirated. In regard to the number of aspiration, only on US-GNA was enough in 17patients (70.8%), two in four patients (16.7%) during the period of eight days, three in two patients (8.3%)during 14 days and five in one patient (4.2%) during ten days. Complication due to aspiration procedure occurredin one case (4.2%) of the pleural effusion, which completely improved with conservative treatment and no majorcomplications were found. US-GNA is a simple, safe and cost-effective method of treating the liver abscess.
