(What are small hyperechogenecities in the liver?)
.
Incidental detection of focal hyperechogenicities is frequent during hepatic sonography and possible causesfor these may be intrahepatic duct stone, intraparenchymal calcification, pneumobilia, cysts, or periportalfibrosis. Computed tomography was performed in 26 patients who had intrahepatic focal hyperechogenicities onsonography. The results showed 24 cases (75%) of intrahepatic calcifications, two cases of focal fatty change, onecase of hemangioma and cyt, and no definite abnormal CT findings in four cases. Most (21 cases out of 24) of theintrahepatic calcification were showen as high echogenic foci with posterior shadowings on US and as distincthyperdense calcific spots without bile duct dilatation on CT within right lobe of the liver. Therefore, it can besafely said that focal hyperechogenicities of the right hepatic lobe without biliary dilatation in routineabdominal ultrasonoraphy represent intrahepatic calcific foci in most of cases especially when there is a definiteposterior acoustic shadowing.
