(Ventriculitis by nosocomial flavobacterium meningosepticum in neonates:neurosonographic findings)
.
Ultrasonography is known to be an important diagnostic modality in detection of newborn brain abnormality andhas been used widely in evaluation of intracranial hemorrhage of premature neonates. Authors detected typicalsonographic findings of ventriculitis due to nosocomial Flavobacterium meningosepticum in neonatal intensive careunit. Flavobacterium meningosepticum ventriculitis was confirmed by CSF culture in three cases which included onepreterm post-operative case of esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula with death, one full termpost-operative case of diaphragmatic hernia with neurologic deficits, and one preterm case with severe hyalinemembrane disase with hopeless discharge. Ventriculitis of Flavobacterium meningosepticum results in severeneurologic sequelae and high mortality rate and therefore neurosonography is essential for prompt diagnosis andappropriate treatment when central nervous system infection is suspected in infants.
