(The measurement of blood flow of anterior cerebral artery in normal newborn using duplex Dopplerultrasonography)
Keon Soo Han, M.D., Mi Soo Hwang, M.D., Bok Hwan Park, M.D.
Duplex Doppler ultrasonography, a combination of B-mole real time sonography and pulsed Doppler sonography, has made it possible to quantitatively measure the velocity and flow waveforms of the anterior certebral artery. The authors measured the blood flow velocity of the anterior cerebral artery of 100 healthy newborns with duplexDoppler ultrasonography (5.0 MHz, mechanical sector probe, ultramark 9, ATL, USA) and analyzed the wave form andcalculated S/D (systolic.diatolic) ratio, pulsatility index, resistive index. The wave form of the anteriorcerebral artery in all 100 newborns showed uniformly biphasic form which has low vascular resistance or lowimpedance of vascular bed. The mean S/D ratio was 3.18+0.45, mean of pulsatility index was 1.30+0.12, and the meanof resistive index was 0.69+0.05. There was no significant difference in the resistive index and pulsatility indexbetween sexes and among age groups (0-7) (p>0.05). In conclusion, duplex Doppler ultrasonography may play animportant role in the evaluation of cerebral blood flow without invasiveness, so the wave forms and calculatedindices of the anterior cerebral artery can help to evaluate the cerebral flow abnormality in infants.
