(Sonographic anatomy of the shoulder: correlation with cut surfaces of cadavers)
Heung Sik Kang, M.D.,
To understand sonographic anatomy of the shoulder that is necessary for correct interpretation of rotator cuffsonography, sonographic images of normal volunteer were correlated with transverse, sagittal and oblique coronal, parallel to the long axis of rotator cuff, sections of 3 cadaveric shoulders. Tendinous portion of rotator cuffshowed homogeneous high echogenicity and was well differentiated from overlying deltoid muscle and humeral head.Distal part of supraspinatus, most susceptible to injury, showed beak-like appearance and was free from acousticshadowing of acromion, Every tendon of rotaor cuff was depicted well and showed similar configuration tocardaveric cut surfaces. We conclude that sonography accurately displays the anatomy of the rotator cuff and couldbe an useful modality for the diagnosis of rotator cuff injury.
