(Sonographic appearance of the masses in the inguinal areas)
Kook Jin Ahn, M.D.,
We performed sonography in 31 patients who complained of palpable mass in inguinal areas and analyzedsonographic findings of 21 patients verified at surgery or clinical follow-up study. A total of 27 lesions from 21patients consisted of 10 cases of inguinal hernia, 8 cases of hydrocele (six cases of them were accompanied withhernia), 7 cases of cordocele and 2 cases of tuberculous epididymitis. The hydrocele was an evident cystic masswith typical tear drop appearance, having intraabdominal connection, and these sonographic findings were wellcorrelated with surgical findings. In contrast, cordocele confirmed by clinical follow-up study showed round oroval cytic mass without intraabdominal connection. The hernia was shown as reducible bowel mass or echogenic massof omentum and often accompanied with hydrocele, but in 4 cases, hydrocele was the only finding of hernia withoutany visible internal mass. Therefore, when hydrocele was noted during the sonographic examination in the inguinalarea, accurate evulation was required for detection of hernia. Tuberculous epididymitis was seen as an echogenicmass at the scrotum area, which was impossible to differentiate from a scrotal hernia containing omentum.Superficial sonographic examination was valuable in detecting and differentiating the palpable masses in theinguinal area.
