Sonography of childhood intussusception: findings and reliability
.
Sonography is considered a useful method in the diagnosis of intussusception but the reliability has not beeninvestigated. We undertook an evaluation of child intussusception concerning the sonographic findings and itsreliability. A total of 139 patients who had possibility of intussusception were evaluated by first or second yearresidents. When the target sign was demonstrated along the course of the colon we considered intussusception. Onehundred and four cases had target signs and 35 cases were negative. There were two false positive cases, and nofalse negative. The Specificity was 100% and the sensitivity was 95%, the accuracy was 98%. Lymph nodes in themsentery of the terminal ileum were enlarged in 70 cases out of 93 cases. The sonography in a child intussuceptionis considered an excellent diagnostic modality of choice because of its high accuracy on the basis of sonographictarget sign.
