| In order to examine the influence of peripheral resistance on the Doppler blood velocity waveform, gelfoam powder suspension was injected into the femoral artery through the opposite femoral arterial catheter and blood velocity indices were analized in five rabbits. Pulsatility index, resistive index and peak systolic velocity least diastolic index ratio were increased proportionally with amount of gelfoam injected. The correlation between pulsatility index, resistive index and peak systolic velocity least diastolic index ration and amount of gelfoam injected were statistically singnificant with r=0.76, 0.76 and 0.77 respectively. In cases of severe stenosis or obstrcution, end systolic reverse flow, absent diastolic flow and sharpening(rapid rise and fall off) of systolic waveform were observed. We conclude that pulsatility index, resistive index and systolic diastolic velocity ratio can be used clinically as a reliable expression of peripheral resistance and visual analysis of blood velocity waveform may be helpful in evaluation of severe blood flow resistance or obstruction. |
