Ultrasonography (US) was used to evaluate 54 pediatric patients with clinically suspected intus-suscpetion. US visualization of an intussusceptum was the criterion for the diagnosis of intussusception. Intussusception was diagnosed correctly in 37 patients; there was no false positive or false negative case.
Ultrasonographically, we tried US-guided hydrostatic reduction immediately using water enema technique in all cases. Among 37 cases of intussusception, 31 cases were reduced and thus success rate was 84%. We believe US is a simple, very accurate diagnostic modality in suspected intussusception, and US-guided hydrostatic reduction is a promising technique in the management of intussusception. |
