| Ultrasonographic Findings of Soft Tissue Masses of the Extremities |

| Ultrasonography is a safe, noninvasive and yet effective imaging method of the body. However, it has been used only limitedly in the diagnosis of the tissue masses of the extremities such as Baker;s cyst or vascular disease.
Authors analysed ultrasonographic findings of 33 various soft tissue masses of the extremities studied at Department of Radiology, Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic University Medical College during the past two years.
1. Ultrasonography was beneficial for localization and study of anatomical extent of the soft tissue masses in the extremities.
2. Ultrasonography was able to differentiate cystic mass from solid mass.
3. Both Baker's cyst and ganglion cyst were anechoic with posterior wall enhancement. Abscess was generally hypoechoic with irregular internal echogenicities. Lipoma presented as hyperechoic or hypoechoic masses.
Hemangioma revealed internal septation and small high echogenicities with posterior acoustic shadowing in the hypoechoic mass. Histologic characters of the other masses could not be easily identified by ultrasound. |
